Why Should We Plant More Churches?

The most common question that we get is “why do you want to start another church.”  The answer to that question is two-fold:

1. There is a Need

    1. There are 195 million non-churched people in America, making America one of the top four largest “unchurched” nations in the world.
    2. In spite of the rise of mega-churches, no county in America has a greater church population than it did ten years ago.
    3. During the last ten years, combined communicant membership of all Protestant denominations declined by 9.5 percent (4,498,242), while the national population increased by 11.4 percent (24,153,000).
    4. Each year 3,500 to 4,000 churches close their doors forever; yet only as many as 1,500 new churches are started.
    5. There are now nearly 60 percent fewer churches per 10,000 persons than in 1920. For example:
      • In 1920, 27 churches existed for every 10,000 Americans
      • In 1950, 17 churches existed for every 10,000 Americans
      • In 1996, 11 churches exited for every 10,000 Americans
    6. “Today, of the approximately 350,000 churches in America, four out of five are either plateaued or declining.”
    7. One American denomination recently found that 80% of its converts came to Christ in churches less than two years old.
    8. Hence the claim of many leaders: “The single most effective evangelistic methodology under heaven is planting new churches” (Peter Wagner).

2. It Bring’s Glory To God

Church planting is needed to bring about the maximum amount of people to worship our great and glorious God.  We know from Scripture that every individual from every people group on the planet exists for the sole person of glorifiying God (see Isaiah 43:6, Colossians 1:16). Obviously  though, the world is full of people who give glory to idols rather than to God.  Church planting though seeks to overturn this problem by fullfilling the Great Commission given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ that tells us to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that [Christ commanded]” (Matthew 28:16-20). When we follow this command faithfully and consistently, the result can be nothing but new churches and lost people from every tribe, tongue, and nations, turning from idols to the one true and living God.  We know this to be true from the apostle Paul’s life, for when He carried out the Great Commission in Thessalonica, the result was a new church, and people who turned from idols to serve the living God (1 Thessalonians 1:9). So, why do we plant more churches? Because it brings glory to God.

Our Goal in Church Planting

As you may know, Grace Church is a relatively new church, but this does not prevent us from thinking, praying, and pursuing the task of planting more churches.  We do not believe that we are here to build a kingdom called Grace Church, but we exist as a body of believers to further the Kingdom of God by making disciples of all nations (i.e., people groups), which results in planting churches.  Therefore our goal at Grace Church is to plant more churches in the U.S. and in foreign countries
